Community groups in Drumquin and Killen are set to benefit from the latest round of grants from the Cornavarrow Slieveglass Wind Farm Fund. The fund, established by leading wind farm owner and operator Energia Group, aims to ensure that the benefits of renewable energy extend beyond environmental gains to positively impact the local community. Administered by the Fermanagh Trust, the Wind Farm Fund offers grants to community projects within 5km of either the Cornavarrow or Slieveglass Wind Farms. The Energia fund continues to make a significant impact by supporting local initiatives that enhance community facilities, promote social inclusion, and improve resources for local groups.
Among the recent beneficiaries is Drumquin Men’s Shed, who received a significant grant to enhance its workshop facilities. The funding will allow the purchase of new equipment, including a band saw, planer thicknesser, and woodturning lathe, enabling members to safely undertake a more diverse range of projects. Tom Gormley, Secretary of Drumquin Men’s Shed, highlighted the importance of the grant:
“This funding allows us to create a safer, more efficient workspace where our members can develop new skills and work on meaningful projects. The Men’s Shed plays a vital role in reducing isolation and promoting wellbeing, and this investment ensures we can continue to provide this essential service.”

Another recent recipient is Killen Rangers Football Club, which has received funding to expand resources for its youth section. As the club experiences growing participation numbers, the grant will help supply additional goalposts and training footballs to ensure all young players have access to proper equipment. Alex Sproule, Youth Coordinator at Killen Rangers FC, expressed her gratitude for the funding:
“We cater for up to 120 players aged 4 to 15 and rely heavily on our dedicated volunteers. Fortunately, there is a fantastic community spirit in Killen, which keeps the club thriving. As a club, we depend on fundraising and grant support, so we’re incredibly grateful for this funding, which will make a real difference.”

In addition to these grants, several other community initiatives in the Drumquin and Killen areas have received funding for building upgrades, event support, and social activities, ensuring continued growth and development within the local area.
