Young people aged 15–16 across Fermanagh and Cavan are invited to take part in ‘Generation Nature’, an eight-session programme running from April to June 2026 that supports young people to connect with nature, learn conservation skills and take positive climate action in their local area. The programme is part of the Empowering Communities for Climate Change initiative, delivered by The Fermanagh Trust and Cavan County Local Development, funded by the International Fund for Ireland.
All sessions will be facilitated by local conservation and bushcraft specialist Tony Smith, from Oakwood Bushcraft Forest School & Wilderness Living. Drawing on his expertise, Tony will guide participants to move through the programme as learners, explorers and changemakers, building confidence, practical skills and a strong sense of responsibility for nature in their communities.
The eight themed workshops include connecting as a group and with nature, youth leadership and wildlife protection through an evening bat and wildlife session. Young people will also explore freshwater conservation and water quality testing, responsible outdoor practice through Leave No Trace, woodland ecology, habitat surveying and invasive species with hands-on local conservation action. The programme concludes with a celebration and showcase event.
Participants of ‘Generation Nature’ will work towards and gain two nationally recognised awards: the John Muir Award and Leave No Trace certification. Workshops will take place at a range of local woodland, river and lakeside locations across Fermanagh and Cavan, giving young people the opportunity to learn directly within the landscapes and ecosystems of the cross-border region. Transport will be provided from both Fermanagh and Cavan to each workshop venue to help ensure that travel is not a barrier to participation.
Annette Leonard, Community Climate Action Co-ordinator at The Fermanagh Trust, said
“Generation Nature is a really positive opportunity for teenagers in our area to get involved in practical action for nature while developing skills, confidence and leadership. We know that it will be their generation who will live with the long-term impacts of environmental change. It is vital that they are supported to care about their local environment and to feel empowered to make a difference. Programmes like this help young people realise that their voices matter and that real change can start in their own communities.”
There is growing recognition internationally that supporting young people to protect and restore nature is essential for the future of the planet. ‘Generation Nature’ places that ambition directly into local places across Fermanagh and Cavan, helping participants connect with nature and take meaningful action for the environments they care about.
