The Callagheen Wind Farm Fund, administered and managed by the Fermanagh Trust, is for applications. The fund established in conjunction with Scottish Power Renewables awards grants to community projects within 7km of the wind farm, located between Belleek and Garrison.
Proposals are welcomed from all aspects of community life, economic, social and educational, with preference given to projects that have an environmental theme, are linked to sustainable local activities and have a positive impact on the local community.
The Callagheen Wind Farm Community Fund provided vital support to a wide range of local groups across the area last year, helping them to deliver projects that strengthened community life, promoted wellbeing and enhanced local facilities.
Previous recipient of the Callagheen Wind Farm Fund, Garrison Community Group, used their grant to deliver a range of engaging summer activities.
Among the successful applicants, Cashel Community Association used its funding to run a series of workshops and educational activities promoting mental and physical health with a focus on supporting the local elderly population. Cashel Senior Citizens Group also delivered a similar programme of health and wellbeing activities, from fitness and healthy eating classes to craft and social sessions.
Several projects enhanced facilities and outdoor spaces for local people. Friends of St. Davog’s improved school playgrounds and planting zones to make them more accessible for all pupils, while Belleek Development and Heritage Group brightened the village with new energy-efficient Christmas lights and created a new, child-friendly heritage trail. St. Martin’s Primary School used its award to deliver a healthy living and outdoor learning programme, which included a new cycle-to-school initiative and a dedicated outdoor learning area.
Community groups also encouraged social connection and lifelong learning. Mulleek Women’s Group and Garrison Women’s Group ran a range of winter activities, talks and trips for their members, while Belleek CCE hosted six music masterclasses led by high-profile tutors for young traditional musicians. Garrison Community Group delivered a summer programme for local children and young people, including futsal, surfing, crafts, and the popular Melvin Fest event.
A number of awards directly benefited community venues and facilities. Melvin Recreational & Resource Complex purchased new spin bikes for its community gym, while Melvin Enterprises used its grant to buy essential equipment for The Gillaroo Centre. Belleek Men’s Shed improved its workspace with new energy-saving lighting, insulation and equipment. Devenish St. Mary’s GAA upgraded essential grounds maintenance equipment.
Environmental and educational initiatives were also supported. Roscor River Erne Angling Club delivered seminars and field trips to promote appreciation of local waterways, while Lakeland Community Care ran a health and wellbeing programme for senior citizens in Garrison and the purchase of new high-backed chairs for participants.
