The Fermanagh Recreational Trust, administered by the Fermanagh Trust, is now open for applications, supporting the organisation, development and funding of recreational activities and facilities across County Fermanagh, with a strong emphasis on young people and youth development.
Recent grants have supported a wide range of talented individuals and clubs, including Enniskillen Royal Boat Club, which has received funding to purchase new indoor rowing machines to maintain high-quality training for its junior members. The new equipment will help ensure training continues without disruption and supports athletes competing at national and international level.
Among the individual athletes previously supported is Naoise McManus, who has achieved multiple national and international medals in wrestling and has been selected to compete at the U17 World Beach Wrestling Championships later this year. Funding is helping with competition entry, squad fees and travel to key qualifying events.
Tomas Gormley, also from Erne Wrestling Club is now part of the Ireland national squad. His recent successes include Irish and English national titles and international podium finishes. Support is helping with the ongoing costs of training, travel and competition as he works towards future European Championships and longer-term Olympic ambitions.
Senior wrestler Darragh Love, who represents both Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has also received support. After winning the British Senior Championships and earning Team GB selection, Darragh continues to balance elite training with full-time study at Queen’s University Belfast. Funding is contributing towards international training camps and competitions essential for progression at senior and U23 level.
Ellie Dunlop, now training with Lurgan Amateur Swimming Club following the closure of the Lakeland Forum, trains up to six times per week and travels long distances daily. Recent medals at Irish Nationals and international meets highlight her potential, with funding helping to offset travel and pool costs.
Enniskillen Lakelanders Swim Club has received continued support while operating from Omagh due to the Forum closure. Funding is helping cover coaching and transport costs, ensuring children and young people across Fermanagh can continue swimming during this challenging period.
Runner Frank Buchanan, who has represented Ireland and Northern Ireland at major championships, has received support towards altitude training as preparation for European cross-country competition.
James Cooper, Chairman of the Fermanagh Recreational Trust, said:
“It is great sport is prominent in the County and we hope to reach even more with grants towards the considerable costs of competing, equipment and training. It is more important than ever that we support both individuals and organisations helping young people reach their potential.”
Potential areas of support include equipment, coaching, training, facility development, bursaries and activities that increase participation among young people.
