The Joan Trimble Bursary Awards, administered by The Fermanagh Trust, are now accepting applications. Established in 2002 in memory of the renowned Enniskillen-born musician and composer Joan Trimble, the bursary scheme was created by her family to honour her lifelong dedication to County Fermanagh. These awards aim to foster the involvement of young people in music, creativity, the performing arts, and Irish culture.
The bursaries support individuals up to and including 25 years of age, providing financial assistance for specialist education, training sessions, and courses, as well as international cultural programs. Additional opportunities include participation in master classes and summer schools. To be eligible, applicants must reside in Fermanagh, have been in full-time education in County Fermanagh, or be attending university or higher education while maintaining official residency in Fermanagh.
Recent Joan Trimble Bursary recipient Dáire Dunn
Previous recipients have utilised the funding for various purposes, such as acquiring musical instruments, lessons, and attending master classes. Notably, Dáire Dunn was awarded a bursary to attend a Tradfest masterclass in Belfast, where he gained invaluable knowledge from seasoned instructors. This preparation was instrumental in his success at the Ulster Fleadh, where he secured first place in the U12 Fiddle category and went on to represent Ulster at the All Ireland in County Wexford.
Liz McVey, granddaughter of Joan Trimble and Chairperson of the Bursary Awards, expressed her enthusiasm for the Award’s ongoing impact: “We are proud to have supported so many talented young people over the years, helping them to access unique experiences that have been pivotal in their development. Dáire’s achievement is a perfect example of how these bursaries can prepare young musicians for success. We hope to replicate this for many more aspiring artists, ensuring they gain the skills and confidence to excel in their fields. The Joan Trimble Bursary Awards are committed to expanding access to the arts in Fermanagh, and we encourage more young people to apply.”
There is no minimum grant, and bursaries up to a maximum of £1,000 per academic year are available. In exceptional circumstances, a higher award may be considered. The deadline for applications is Friday, 1st November 2024. For further information or to download an application form, please CLICK HERE or contact 028 66 320 210 / secretary@fermanaghtrust.org.
