Letterbreen Community Development Association

Background and Rationale
Letterbreen is situated five miles south-west of Enniskillen on the main route to Sligo. Prior to the development of the Letterbreen Community Development Association, public meetings were held in the Half Way Inn, which were initially facilitated by the Fermanagh District Council. These early meetings which explored the establishment of a community development group for the Letterbreen area were attended by 30 to40 members from the Letterbreen village and the surrounding rural district.
In February 1999, the Letterbreen Community Development Association was officially formed. Members stressed the need to establish cross-community activities for Letterbreen and advance both the social and economic needs of the area.
Impacts of the Mentoring Support
Reflecting on the impact of the Fermanagh Trust Mentoring Scheme, it was noted that members undertook new roles within the committee such as chairperson and secretary. Members also attended training in “Book-keeping” supported by the Fermanagh Trust.
The Fermanagh Trust Mentoring Scheme supported the group through organizing and carrying out various activities within the community. This included a table quiz, a treasure hunt and a barbecue night.
Also, as result of the work with the Fermanagh Trust Mentor funding was secured from Fermanagh District Council, the Fermanagh Trust, Fermanagh District Partnership and the Rural Community Network. Group members attended many meetings and consultations with funding bodies and statutory agencies.
Other projects that the Group got involved with as a result of the Mentoring Programme and its support included the Rural Lift Project and the Police Liaison Committee. A Farming sub-committee was also formed and a cross-border trip was organized to Enfield Bull Unit.
Many of these activities have provided a social outlet and entertainment for the people in Letterbreen above and beyond the opportunities that were available before the group became established. A table quiz gathered an audience of 50 people from all sections of the community. This was supported and advertised by the three churches in Letterbreen. The Treasure Hunt was organized throughout the three churches bringing the community closer together and creating good community spirit. One member outlined “There was little interaction between the three churches prior to the development of the Association. People would come home from work and close their door, the community was not carrying out any activities together. The Fermanagh Trust through the provision of a mentor to our group helped us address this issue.
The Sculptor Trail is a tourist attraction in Letterbreen. Making links with the Republic of Ireland, good partnerships have been formed. This development does not only encourage tourists to the area but also gives Letterbreen an identity.
Cookery classes are carried out locally and attended by many. A rural lift service is in place, where transport is provided once a week from Letterbreen to Enniskillen. This service is affordable and accessible for the people in Letterbreen.
